In 2018, Suzanne and I decided to start a company and and decided to invest in the health of others. Our first project was the Borland Medi-Clinic in Williams Lake, BC. Like many rural communities in Canada, Williams Lake had a large number of unattached patients. All physicians in town was extremely busy and could not take on any more patients, which lead to our Emergency Room being utilized as a primary care provider. After deliberation and putting our heads together, we started the Borland Medi-Clinic in 2018.
I still remember the first week that we opened. We basically started a website and create a facebook page and opened the doors in April 2018. I was excited and was expecting a rush of unattached patients flocking into the new office, that we spent 3 months renovating to replace the traditional cold clinical feeling with something warm and inviting. Instead, I saw 10 patients in my first week. I still remember how I went home after that week and felt somewhat defeated that this project, that we were planning for months might not come off the ground as we planned. 2 years later, we registered just over 8000 patients in the clinic and felt accomplished for helping so many that did not have another option.
Over the course of this 2 years, I became very interested in the reversal of Type II Diabetes through therapeutic nutrition. I was particularly interested in nutritional ketosis and saw Dr. Jason Fung as a hero for promoting intermittent fasting as a valid option to treat and essentially reverse Type II diabetes to those who needed it. I was excited to hand power back to those who was struggling with a disease that often made them feel hopeless and out of control. I saw HbA1c’s go from 12% to 6% in 3 months. I saw people loosing weight and I saw people feeling better in their bodies that was metabolically mutilated for the longest time. After joining the American College of Lifestyle Medicine to learn more about utilizing Lifestyle as medicine, we came up with the 5 pillars for optimal health. It is not rocket science, but it is interesting to learn more about how your lifestyle can have massive impacts on your ability to prevent illness and disease.
